OpenAI announces first permanent London office after halting UK Stargate project
The new office will hold 544 workers as OpenAI expands its UK teams after pausing a larger data center plan.
OpenAI revealed plans for its first permanent London office in King's Cross on Monday, expanding capacity to meet growing demand in the UK following the company's decision to shelve its major Stargate data centre project last week.
The company halted the Stargate project, previously planned for Northumberland towns including Blyth and Cobalt Park, citing energy costs and regulation as barriers; OpenAI stated it would wait for the "right conditions" to allow long-term investment in Britain's infrastructure.
Spanning 88,500 square feet at Regent Quarter in King's Cross, the new office sits near Google's head office and its £1 billion European headquarters housing DeepMind; OpenAI currently employs approximately 200 staff in London across research, engineering, and sales roles.
Phoebe Thacker, OpenAI's global head of data research programmes and London site lead, said the investment reflects "long-term commitment to the UK," emphasizing London's "incredible depth of talent" and strong track record in artificial intelligence development.
The office development positions London as OpenAI's largest research hub outside the United States; the Stargate plans originated from a landmark tech deal between Britain and the American side announced last September during President Donald Trump's second state visit.
