I Tested Sora's New 'Character Cameo' Feature, and It Was Borderline Disturbing

On Wednesday, OpenAI announced the Character Cameos feature in the Sora app, letting users turn pets, toys, and objects into reusable AI avatars for Sora 2 videos.
Facing a trademark suit from Cameo, celebrity-video platform, OpenAI launched Sora’s update using pets and camera-roll images to avoid full facial scans, addressing users concerned about facial scans.
Creators can start by giving a character a display name and handle, then tag it to appear in videos with permissions options and reuse after a few seconds of footage.
With the app at No. 2 on the App Store, OpenAI highlights pets and objects as stars, citing `If you make a funny image of someone versus a real video, the video feels much more real and lifelike, and there's a stronger emotional resonance` as a key advantage.
Because IP and likeness issues surfaced, early Sora videos depicting copyrighted characters and historical figures prompted OpenAI's policy changes and limited-time signup availability in the US, Canada, Japan, and Korea amid the Cameo lawsuit.
