- President Droupadi Murmu on Friday gave her assent to the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, passed by Parliament this week after introduction on August 20.
- After three and a half years of deliberations, the Centre moved the Bill citing widespread social harms including family violence and suicides, with Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw comparing money-gaming to drug addiction causing suicidal tendencies and psychological disorders.
- Under the new law, service providers face up to three years' jail and Rs 1 crore fine, advertisers up to two years and Rs 50 lakh, and the Centre must establish a central authority to categorise games.
- Several major platforms immediately suspended real-money gaming, including Dream Sports , Gameskraft, Mobile Premier League, and Zupee, while startups that raised over $3 Bn and employ 2 Lakh people face job and revenue uncertainties.
- S Krishnan said the government will issue a notification soon to announce the law's commencement date, allowing some provisions to enforce before final rules, while central government officers gain powers to investigate and seize property amid expected legal challenges.
