NYPD Det. Didarul Islam remembered at memorial one year after deadly Midtown office shooting
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch will lead a memorial for the four people killed, including NYPD Detective Didarul Islam.
On Tuesday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch led a memorial ceremony at the 47th Precinct in the North Bronx, marking one year since the Midtown Manhattan mass shooting that killed four people.
Gunman Shane Tamura killed four people at 345 Park Avenue on July 28, 2025, before dying by suicide. Victims included NYPD Detective Didarul Islam, Wesley Lepatner, Julia Hyman, and security officer Aland Etienne.
New city laws now honor the victims: the Aland Etienne Safety and Security Act protects security workers, while the Didarul Islam Recruitment Act lets school safety agents transfer service time to the NYPD. SEIU Local 32BJ President Manny Pastreich called the laws essential tributes.
Commissioner Tisch announced that Deputy Inspector Muhammad Ashraf will be promoted to inspector on Friday in recognition of the command's work since the shooting. Officers at the precinct continue to honor Islam's legacy and presence.
Detective Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, served three and a half years with the NYPD and is remembered as the first Bangladeshi officer killed in the line of duty. Mayor Mamdani, who sat with Islam's family at the funeral, noted his sacrifice endures as a symbol for the city.
