- On August 7, 1995, British triple jumper Jonathan Edwards set two new world records in quick succession during the World Athletics Championships held in Gothenburg, Sweden.
- Edwards entered the championships in peak form, having jumped an illegal 18.43 meters that year and aiming to improve upon the previous 17.97 meters record set by Willie Banks in 1985.
