One million UK people who have never smoked are now vaping

  • The Office for National Statistics reported more than one million people who have never smoked now use vapes, up from around 940,000 in 2024.
  • For the second year, vaping has surpassed smoking among over-16s, with 5.4 million now using e-cigarettes compared to 4.9 million smokers, according to the ONS.

  • Hazel Cheeseman from Action on Smoking and Health said, "Smoking has fallen enormously over recent decades, but it remains the biggest driver of preventable death." She added, "Now is the time to finish the job."
  • New legislation will permanently ban the legal sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, creating a "smoke-free" generation as the government aims to phase out tobacco sales entirely.
