One in five United Methodist congregations in the US have left the denomination over LGBTQ conflicts
Over 6,000 United Methodist congregations, which accounts for a fifth of the total in the U.S., have received permission to leave the denomination due to a schism over theology and the role of LGBTQ people.
The departures began in 2019 and have reached their highest level this year, with many conservatives choosing to leave amid a growing defiance of bans on LGBTQ marriage and ordination in U.S. churches and conferences.
Most departing congregations are joining the newly created Global Methodist Church, while others are going independent or joining different denominations.
