Nigeria: OPL 245 - Govt Tackles Atiku, Defends Deal As Landmark Resolution
The Nigerian government cites a 2025 Court of Appeal ruling and arbitration outcomes to affirm lawful resolution of OPL 245, enabling projected production of 150,000 barrels daily.
- On Wednesday, Attorney-General of the Federation Prince Lateef Fagbemi refuted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's claims regarding the OPL 245 dispute resolution, describing the criticism as trivializing a "landmark achievement" by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.
- Located about 150 kilometres offshore, OPL 245 remained undeveloped for nearly three decades due to legal disputes before the administration's intervention, which now paves the way for production of about 150,000 barrels per day.
- Citing a 2025 Court of Appeal judgment, the government noted the court dismissed Malabu Oil's challenge to the allocation as statute-barred, while clarifying that arbitration proceedings focused strictly on treaty obligations rather than ownership disputes.
- Atiku claimed it was "troubling" that Malabu was excluded from negotiations, calling the process "recklessness," but the Attorney-General stressed that those currently claiming interest did not participate in the original ICSID proceedings.
- The government urged Nigerians to disregard attempts to undermine the resolution, insisting that developing OPL 245 will unlock significant economic benefits, boost investor confidence, and enhance national revenue.
