Olly Robbins takes legal action against government over Mandelson sacking
The FDA Union says the dismissal lacked fair procedure and was based on a misunderstanding of how security vetting works.
- Sir Olly Robbins has filed for judicial review challenging his dismissal by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Robbins, formerly the top civil servant at the Foreign Office, seeks to quash the decision, arguing the Prime Minister lacked statutory authority.
- Following the vetting of Lord Peter Mandelson, who reportedly failed a background check for his United States ambassadorial post in April, Foreign Office officials overruled the result. The Prime Minister then fired Robbins upon learning of the clearance.
- Representing Robbins, the FDA Union contends the sacking was based on a "grievous misunderstanding" of vetting protocols. His submission claims there was "no fair procedure" and "no process at all," while he was given "irrational" reasons for dismissal.
- Robbins is asking the Courts to determine the Prime Minister's decisions were "unlawful" and "unreasonable." He argues the vetting process is independent of government ministers, who are only informed of the final outcome, not procedural details.
- A September 2025 letter signed by the Foreign Secretary, drafted by Downing Street, serves as key evidence in the challenge. It suggests officials are obligated to withhold vetting details from ministers, potentially contradicting the Prime Minister's rationale for dismissal.
