Germany Recalls Veteran Goalie Manuel Neuer Out of Retirement for World Cup
Neuer returns after retiring from international duty, and Germany names 26 players as injuries weaken its goalkeeper options.
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann recalled 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to the 26-man World Cup squad, reversing the veteran's retirement after the 2024 European Championship following reports in recent weeks of a potential recall.
Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann was assured until last week he would be the starting goalkeeper, but Neuer's selection marks a significant blow after Baumann made 11 appearances for Germany compared to Neuer's 124.
Neuer's selection followed outstanding performances for Bayern, particularly against Real Madrid in the Champions League, though the 40-year-old recently suffered muscular problems in his left calf and faces uncertainty about the German Cup final against Stuttgart.
The German soccer federation revealed the squad on Thursday through drip-feed announcements to generate excitement, with midfielder Joshua Kimmich the first player confirmed for the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Four-Time champion Germany aims for a fifth World Cup title, facing Ivory Coast, Ecuador, and Curacao in Group E, with preparations set to start May 27 in the Bavarian resort of Herzogenaurach.
Bundestrainer Nagelsmann introduced the World Cup squad - 26 players are present. And Manuel Neuer will be in the goal again. He returns two years after his resignation to the national team - as number one.
