Oil Spill Disrupts Livelihoods in Mexico's Veracruz State
Over a dozen spill sites have been detected since March 1, threatening fish and shrimp farming and impacting local tourism, environmental group Cemda reported.
- Since March 1, coastal residents in Veracruz have found hardened tar and viscous oil washing up on beaches, while Cemda identified over a dozen spill sites along Veracruz and neighbouring Tabasco.
- Pemex denied any leak from its facilities this week, stating the company has been linked to incidents in recent years, including an October leak recovering 2.7 million liters from the Pantepec River in Veracruz.
- Aurora Apolonia Martinez, a fisherwoman, said nets came up full of oil and unusable, while tourism has been hit, with visits discouraged and Nicolás Vargas warning beaches must be fully cleaned.
- With no official cause disclosed, authorities have not told residents what caused the spill, and Pemex said it would carry out surveillance but did not immediately provide new information when asked.
- Veracruz's heavy oil activity frames the spill's significance, as Veracruz, Mexico, is heavy on oil activity on land and at sea, increasing contamination risks for Jicacal and Las Barrillas, Veracruz, fishing villages and tourist destinations.
