Ohio School Report Cards show 5-year high in literacy proficiency
Statewide math and English language arts proficiency reached five-year highs as attendance improved and gains spread across all 10 demographic groups, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen D. Dackin released the 2026 Ohio School Report Cards, revealing statewide English language arts proficiency reached 62.2% and mathematics hit 56.4%, both five-year highs.
- Governor DeWine launched the ReadOhio initiative in 2023 to raise literacy achievement, with the General Assembly mandating the Science of Reading in schools to strengthen instruction across Ohio.
- Student attendance continues to improve, with chronic absenteeism dropping to 23.9% over the past year. Meanwhile, 25.4% of graduates achieved proficiency on three or more career-technical assessments in 2025, marking progress in career readiness.
- The ReadOhio coaching network now includes 140 coaches serving more than 200 schools to sustain instructional improvements. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has mailed over 28 million books statewide to support early childhood literacy.
- Initiatives like the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge and the OhioSEE eye care program reflect broader wellness efforts supporting student success. These programs help ensure students remain healthy, present, and ready to learn both in and out of the classroom.
