Mamata Banerjee’s Vehicle Attacked with Mud, Shoes in North 24 Parganas
Banerjee said stones, shoes and mud were thrown at her convoy as police opened an investigation into the custodial death of a TMC worker.
On Sunday, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced protests in Halisahar, North 24 Parganas, as bricks, stones, and mud were hurled at her convoy while traveling to visit a deceased TMC worker's family.
Banerjee was visiting the family of Birju Keot, a 48-year-old TMC affiliate who died early Saturday at Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital after falling ill in Halisahar police custody, where his family alleges he suffered physical torture.
During the assault, Banerjee stated, 'If the windows had been open, my head would have been split open,' and claimed police remained 'silent spectators' while providing protection to the BJP during the attack by 'anti-social elements.'
Rejecting the allegations, the BJP stated Banerjee traveled to Kanchrapara to 'provoke tensions' and maintained protests erupted spontaneously. State Minister Agnimitra Paul added, 'We do not endorse it,' regarding the violence.
Authorities are probing the exact cause of death, reviewing station CCTV footage, and videographing the autopsy to establish the sequence of events, Barrackpore police chief Singh said following the family's physical assault allegations.
