Florida officer talks young man out of jumping off bridge

A nearly 40-minute conversation and a hand extended by Officer Antonio Richardson helped keep the man from jumping, officials said.

  • On Sunday, April 12, Officer Antonio Richardson talked a young man down from the Dames Point Bridge in Jacksonville after responding to reports of someone preparing to jump.
  • Richardson, an 18-year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, spent nearly 40 minutes engaging the man alongside six other patrol officers, prioritizing empathy and personal connection over standard police procedure.
  • During the encounter, Richardson told the man, "Whatever you're going through, you can get through it," a message that preceded the individual's decision to reach out and embrace the officer.
  • The JSO released body-worn camera footage to share a message of hope with the community. Melissa Camp, executive director of behavioral health at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital, said simply being present can make a life-saving difference.
  • With more than 49,000 suicide deaths recorded in 2023, officials emphasize that free support remains available 24 hours a day by calling or texting the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
