Man Accused of Attempted Murder of Police Officer Remanded in Custody
Police said the officer remains hospitalized with serious injuries as detectives linked Carey to the charges and the case was sent back for June 18.
On Thursday, 36-year-old Conor Carey appeared at Downpatrick Magistrates Court charged with the attempted murder of a police officer after allegedly driving a stolen police car at the officer on Colmcille Road on Sunday.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the Sunday incident as a "horrific incident," during which the officer fired one round from his gun during the encounter with the stolen vehicle.
Downpatrick Magistrates Court heard the officer remains "seriously unwell" with a broken wrist, leg crush injury, head wounds, and cuts, though injuries are not life-threatening but cause "a great deal of pain."
Carey replied "Yes" when asked if he understood the charges, while his defense lawyer stated his client "strenuously denies any involvement in the matter." The court remanded him in custody until June 18.
Separately, Kieran Turley from Vianstown Road appeared in court Monday charged with dangerous driving and driving without insurance, a distinct legal proceeding unrelated to the attempted murder case.
