Norte Fire in San Clemente Threatens Homes, Forces Evacuations
Fire crews used ground handlines and aircraft as wind and rugged terrain drove the blaze and forced mandatory evacuations, officials said.
On Friday, October 16, 2026, the Norte Fire broke out in San Clemente amid strong Santa Ana winds, rapidly growing to an estimated 250 acres while threatening homes across south Orange County.
Firefighters responded at 11:30 a.m. to a vegetation fire in the 3000 block of Eminencia del Norte, where local terrain and wind conditions caused the blaze to spread at a dangerous rate, the Orange County Fire Authority reported.
Authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for San Juan Zones 4, 5, and 10 and San Clemente Zones 12 and 13, while 15 engines were requested to provide critical structure protection.
Capistrano Unified School District campuses dismissed students early due to the fire threat, with shelters established at the San Clemente Community Center at 100 Calle Seville and San Juan Capistrano Community Center.
Emergency crews maintain an aggressive attack using ground handlines and water-dropping aircraft to establish containment lines, as officials continue monitoring wind conditions and providing updates on evacuation boundaries.
