Construction Worker Injured After Trench Collapse in Oxford
MIOSHA is leading a workplace safety probe after a 35-year-old worker was buried in a trench collapse and hospitalized in stable condition.
On Tuesday, a 35-year-old Ira Township man was rescued from a trench collapse in Oxford Township. Deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office and the Oxford Fire Department responded to the 3900 block of Barber Road to extricate the worker.
Preliminary investigations indicate workers were installing field tile for a septic system when a trench wall collapsed. The man had entered the trench to glue pipe together before being buried beneath the soil.
Emergency crews successfully extricated the man, who was transported to McLaren Oakland Hospital. Officials confirmed he remains in stable condition while undergoing further medical evaluation.
The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration is leading the workplace safety investigation into the incident. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau is assisting, utilizing the department's Drone Unit for aerial documentation.
Investigators will focus on workplace safety protocols at the Barber Road construction site to determine the cause of the collapse. The ongoing probe aims to identify if any safety measures were breached.
