Nvidia CEO says China on track "to win the AI race," FT reports

  • Jensen Huang, Nvidia CEO, told the Financial Times on Nov 5 that China is going to win the AI race and said on X late Nov 5 it is now `nanoseconds behind` the U.S.
  • By contrast, Huang cited Beijing's subsidized electricity and streamlined regulations that lower AI operating costs, while Western countries face growing AI rules and `cynicism`, Huang said.
  • Washington has restricted exports, banning sales of Nvidia's Blackwell chips to China, and Nvidia has not applied for US export licences as Huang said China has effectively shut it out of its market.
  • As a result, developers and firms face challenges as Huang warned losing half of the world's AI developers would hurt America, while Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. pay 15% of Chinese revenues to the U.S. government pending approvals.
  • Beijing has moved to require state-backed data centres in China under 30% complete to remove foreign AI chips, while subsidies cutting energy costs by 50% boost Chinese tech giants including ByteDance, Alibaba Group and Tencent.
