At the Spree in Cottbus, the stock of nutrias - also called beaver rats - has recently grown strongly. The animals look cute, but they cause damage to the shore and can endanger native species. The responsible water association has now awarded a tail premium for hunters.
The problem isn't new, but nutria are spreading rapidly in Cottbus. Originally imported for fur production in the 1920s, these animals are now destroying riverbanks, endangering dikes, and threatening the local ecosystem. rbb reporter Josefine Jahn reports.
