Nurses in British Columbia will picket the province’s largest hospital next week
The union says 60,000 nurses will keep overtime limits and non-nursing work bans while returning to talks with health employers Monday.
- Beginning Tuesday, July 7 at 5:30 a.m., the BCNU will escalate job action with a picket line at Vancouver General Hospital while maintaining essential service levels to protect patient safety.
- The escalation follows an historic strike vote where 98.2% of nearly 51,000 nurses voted in favor of job action, after 67% rejected a tentative agreement failing to address wage and retention concerns.
- Since Thursday, NBA members have enforced a provincewide ban on non-nursing duties and overtime restrictions to pressure the Health Employers Association of B.C. for a new collective agreement.
- HEABC and the NBA agreed to return to the bargaining table on Monday afternoon, though BCNU President Adriane Gear stated the government must address the intense daily pressure nurses face.
- BCNU CEO Jim Gould emphasized the government cannot solve the nursing shortage without serious improvements to working conditions, including pay increases and mitigation of unsafe staffing levels.
