Energy poverty is increasing in the Netherlands. Approximately 510,000 households were affected last year. That's almost 180,000 more than in 2023, according to research by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO).
More than 6 percent of all households faced energy poverty.
Between 2019 and 2023, the share of households experiencing energy poverty decreased, primarily due to improved housing quality, energy underconsumption, and government financial support. In 2024, energy-poor households spent an average of almost 12 percent on energy, compared to 7.5 percent in 2023.
Energy poverty is affecting a growing number of Dutch people. In 2024, some 510,000 households struggled to pay their energy bills. This represents an increase of over fifty percent compared to the previous year, according to a preliminary estimate by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the TNO research institute. The main cause is the removal of temporary government measures, such as the price cap and the energy surcharge.
