Origin Energy Says Data of 900K Customers Accessed in Cyberattack
- On Tuesday, Origin Energy confirmed a cybersecurity breach exposed the personal information of about 900,000 current and former customers in a major incident.
- Origin CEO Frank Calabria explained the company had reviewed a "potential security threat" since early July but deemed it not credible until July 22, when new information emerged indicating a breach occurred.
- Affected customer data includes names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, and partial credit card or bank account digits. Origin warned, "We are acutely aware others may exploit this incident," heightening scam risks.
- Calabria issued an apology on Tuesday and said "We have now completed the initial phase of our review into Origin's customer data security incident." The company is working with the Australian Cyber Security Centre to investigate.
- The incident joins a growing list of Australian organizations suffering major cybersecurity problems in recent years, including Optus, Qantas, and Medibank, plus Partnered Health's July medical record breach.
