The PS asked for clarification from the government on the extension of the Almaraz nuclear power plant until 2030, questioning whether Portugal was consulted by Spain and what steps were taken.
In August the Spanish Government granted the extension to the Almaraz nuclear power plant, which means delaying the closure of its two reactors, initially set for November 2027 in Unit I and October 2028 in Unit II, and opens the possibility that this movement may end up affecting the planned closure schedule for the entire nuclear park.
There are decisions that go well beyond a date in the calendar. The extension of the authorization to operate the Almaraz nuclear power plant until June 2030 is one of them. The government finally gave the ‘yes’ to postpone the closure of the Almaraz nuclear power plant and postpone it until June 2030. It did so quickly, without exhausting the deadlines at its disposal. And it did so by trying to make as little noise as possible, with the publication in the BOE on a Friday in the middle of August of the ministerial order confirming the authorization to the Cáceres plant to continue functioning.
