NTSB releases initial report in fatal plane crash that killed songwriter Brett James

Brett James lost control during a visual approach, entering a tightening spiral before crashing and killing three on board, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

  • Last month, the National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report on the plane crash that killed Grammy award-winning songwriter Brett James, 57, his wife Melody Carole and stepdaughter Meryl Wilson.
  • James requested a visual approach and said he would perform a full 360-degree turn, but after initiating the turn the aircraft descended in a left turn and James lost control.
  • Flight-Tracking data and surveillance video show the plane descending in a left turn from 6,300 ft to about 3,300 ft, while witnesses near Iotla Valley Elementary School saw it flying low, rocking wings, then rolling inverted.
  • The wreckage came to rest upright about a half-mile from Macon County Airport runway and was recovered for examination; investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board found no signs of engine failure and no ground injuries.
  • James was a 2020 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee known for major hits, and the crash followed recent family celebrations; he is survived by his adult children.
