NSA said to be readying Anthropic's Mythos for use in cyber operations
About half a dozen Anthropic engineers are helping the agency customize Mythos for offensive cyber operations, though it is unclear if active hacking is underway.
- On Friday, The Financial Times reported Anthropic deployed approximately six engineers to the National Security Agency to help customize its Mythos cybersecurity AI model for specific applications, citing anonymous sources.
- The NSA tasked with conducting offensive cyberattacks sought access to Mythos as governments worldwide compete for the restricted model, which Anthropic limited due to hacking concerns.
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened in February 2026 to designate Anthropic a 'supply chain risk' unless the firm granted unfettered military access to Claude, a designation typically reserved for foreign adversaries.
- Anthropic's Claude previously appeared in the January 2026 Venezuela raid via Palantir Technologies partnership, with programs capable of controlling autonomous drones and summarizing documents for Defense Department operations.
- Both the NSA and Anthropic declined to comment on the arrangement; Axios reported in April the NSA used Mythos despite federal restrictions, and President Trump signed a June 2 executive order creating voluntary AI security review frameworks.
