'Right Time': Ivan Cleary to Quit Panthers Coaching Role
The four-time premiership coach is expected to say he will leave after Penrith called a snap media conference.
On Wednesday, Penrith coach Ivan Cleary announced he will step down when his contract expires at the end of 2027, ending his tenure with the club.
Assistant Peter Wallace will replace Cleary as head coach in 2028, a transition Penrith believes will enhance the chances of star halfback Nathan Cleary recommitting long term.
Cleary, who led the club to four straight premierships between 2021 and 2024, said, "It's a decision that I obviously haven't taken lightly but that I've thought about for quite a long time."
Despite the announcement, Cleary remains focused on the 2026 season, stating, "I still have 18 months in the saddle, so to speak. I honestly woke up this morning thinking about the Dragons."
The move comes as Penrith navigates a challenging period for player retention, with key stars Isaah Yeo, Liam Martin, and Brian Too able to test the open market starting November 1.
