Novo, Orbis sign up to $1.4 billion deal to develop oral drugs
The collaboration uses Orbis’ AI-enabled platform to develop macrocycles that could turn injectable treatments into oral medicines, with Novo also making a strategic investment.
- On Thursday, Orbis Medicines signed a drug discovery and licensing deal with Novo Nordisk worth up to $1.4 billion to develop oral therapies for cardiometabolic diseases traditionally treated with injectable drugs.
- The multi-target collaboration utilizes Orbis' AI-enabled nGen platform to discover ring-shaped macrocycles that can address disease targets difficult for conventional small-molecule drugs to reach.
- Orbis CEO Morten Graugaard said preclinical studies showed synthetic macrocycles achieved up to 18% oral bioavailability. "Together with Novo, we have an opportunity to unlock a new generation of oral medicines," Graugaard said.
- Novo's collaboration builds on SNAC, an oral peptide absorption technology acquired with Emisphere Technologies in 2020 and developed since. A Novo spokesperson said the company continues driving innovation through internal research and external partnerships.
- Johnson & Johnson won U.S. approval in March for Icotyde, an oral macrocyclic peptide for plaque psoriasis, while Merck secured approval in July for Lipfendra, an oral macrocyclic peptide that lowers cholesterol.
