Nottingham attacks have parallels to Henry Nowak case, mother says
Families say agencies missed repeated chances to stop Valdo Calocane as the inquiry closes after 164 witness testimonies.
On Friday, June 5, Victims' Commissioner Claire Waxman OBE provided final evidence as the public inquiry into the June 2023 Nottingham attacks concluded after months of testimony on agency failings.
Over 57 days of oral evidence, the inquiry exposed shocking shortcomings across local and national organizations including police and the NHS, as more than 160 witnesses detailed interactions with Valdo Calocane.
Families allege the Crown Prosecution Service "buried" a December 2023 police report by Detective Constable Neil Beddoe arguing Calocane showed "rationality and understanding of consequences"; the CPS denies wrongdoing, claiming it complied with disclosure rules.
Bereaved families described the hearings as "heart-wrenching," stating this is merely the "end of one chapter" while vowing to continue their fight for accountability and truth.
The inquiry will now compile a final report recommending systemic reforms, including addressing the decline of assertive outreach teams, which served only 23 per cent of patients in 2023.
