Notre Dame WR Quincy Porter to Undergo Season-Ending Knee Surgery
Marcus Freeman said the sophomore transfer had a setback in his recovery, and doctors determined another procedure was needed after a recent MRI.
On Monday, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman announced that wide receiver Quincy Porter will undergo season-ending surgery on his patellar tendon. The sophomore transfer from Ohio State has not played this season while recovering from a previous knee injury.
Porter, a former five-star recruit from Bergen Catholic High School, arrived in South Bend after surgery to repair a left knee injury in January. He underwent a minor procedure last month to speed recovery before a recent flare-up necessitated this final surgery.
While Porter remains sidelined, the Fighting Irish receiving corps is led by Micah Gilbert with 334 yards and two touchdowns on 15 receptions. Jordan Faison adds a team-high 17 catches for 239 yards as Notre Dame enters October with a perfect 4-0 record.
Freeman described the situation as "tough news," noting the 6-foot-4, 215-pound receiver has done everything right during rehabilitation. Freeman remains optimistic, saying Porter's "mind is in the right place" for an eventual return after the procedure.
The Irish travel to North Carolina for Saturday's road game looking to maintain momentum after a 49-10 win over Purdue improved their record to 4-0. Freeman's depth at receiver will be tested without Porter available.
