Self-Defense Claimed in Fatal Shooting Inside Cape Cod Restaurant
Campbell’s lawyer says he acted in self-defense after being stabbed, and police say 30 people were inside the restaurant when shots were fired.
On Monday, 26-year-old Nicholos Campbell was arraigned in Orleans District Court on murder charges for the fatal shooting of 35-year-old Careeme Harakh at the Moonfish Restaurant in West Dennis early Saturday morning.
Defense attorney Emir Sehic argued the shooting was a "classic case of self-defense," claiming Campbell was stabbed in the head, while Barnstable County Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Isaacs stated no witnesses observed any altercation.
Campbell, who wore a balaclava during the incident, called 911 immediately after the shooting and surrendered to police in Barnstable, where he turned over his firearm and license to carry.
The court ordered Campbell held without bail pending further proceedings, as Moonfish owner Velma Mitchell wrote she was "saddened beyond words by the tragedy that occurred" at her establishment.
Campbell is scheduled to return to court on July 9 as investigators examine the incident that occurred when about 30 people were inside, though security cameras reportedly stopped operating just before the shooting.
