Florida Leaders Push to Cancel Kanye West Tampa Concerts over History of Antisemitic Comments
Scott says West’s rhetoric makes the publicly funded venue inappropriate and urges officials to ensure tax dollars do not subsidize the shows.
On Monday, Florida Senator Rick Scott, joined by a bipartisan group including Attorney General Ashley Moody and former Governor Charlie Crist, urged the Tampa Sports Authority to cancel upcoming Kanye West concerts at the publicly owned Raymond James Stadium.
Scott argued that taxpayer-funded venues should not subsidize an artist with a documented history of antisemitic rhetoric, including offensive references to Hitler and the use of swastika imagery on merchandise.
Organizations including the Tampa Jewish Federation, the Florida Holocaust Museum, and the Florida chapter of the National Organization for Women have also publicly opposed the scheduled performances, citing the artist's 'consistent pattern of hate speech.'
The authority stated they 'do not condone' West's remarks but maintain that operating a public venue requires adhering to free speech principles, while warning that canceling contracts based on past statements could expose the board to legal risks.
Performances remain scheduled for June 26 and 28 at the stadium, as regional leaders continue to debate the balance between free speech obligations and the responsibility to avoid platforming hateful ideologies using public resources.
