North Korea halts foreign tourism at beach resort weeks after opening
NORTH KOREA, JUL 18 – North Korea halted foreign visits to the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area shortly after Russian diplomatic engagement amid incomplete resort facilities, officials said.
North Korea announced that foreign tourists are 'temporarily' not allowed to visit its newly opened seaside resort, as stated on North Korea's tourism website.
The Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone can accommodate around 20,000 people and was described as a 'world-class' facility.
Following the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, North Korea's National Tourism Administration confirmed the ban without further details.
Kim Jong Un hailed the completion of the resort as one of the 'greatest successes this year' for establishing the country's tourist culture.
The restriction cannot last long, as the construction of the resort complex involved significant costs and its operation could only be made sustainable with foreign currencies.
