Nollywood Mourns As Veteran Actor Francis Duru Dies At 57
The family said he died after a brief illness and asked for privacy as the Actors Guild of Nigeria confirmed the loss.
On Friday, October 23, 2026, the family of veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru announced his death at 57 following a brief illness, with the Actors Guild of Nigeria confirming the news.
Duru rose to prominence after his 1995 breakthrough role as Ahanna in Rattlesnake, an action comedy produced by the late Amaka Igwe, later serving as interim president of the Actors Guild in 2010.
Earlier in June, Duru publicly condemned viral videos claiming he was critically ill, labeling those responsible 'merchants of wickedness' and insisting the footage was false.
Survived by his wife, Adokiye, Duru's passing follows the August 2024 death of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, a loss the actor had described as deeply painful.
Industry associates, including AGN president Abubakar Yakubu, mourned the exit of the 'great thespian,' praising Duru's decades-long legacy in films including Mboputa and his contributions to Nigerian cinema.
