8, Including Trekkers, Missing in Indian Himalayas as Snowfall Hampers Rescue Efforts
A helicopter search found no trace of the group, while officials said one trekker suffered a head injury and more rescue teams were deployed.
On Sunday, the State Disaster Response Force launched search operations for eight individuals missing in the Kedartal region of Uttarkashi district after becoming stranded during a trekking expedition.
The group of 13 departed on October 27, but authorities received an adverse weather alert hours later; heavy snowfall and multiple avalanches trapped them, preventing their scheduled return on October 29.
Rescue personnel cleared snow to extract four support staff—three porters and one cook—near Kachchi Dhang on October 31; search teams have not located the remaining eight despite two aerial reconnaissance flights.
SDRF Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi stated the force will attempt to access the area by helicopter on Monday, November 2, deploying a five-member high-altitude rescue team and a four-member team from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering.
Uttarakhand has witnessed several high-altitude disasters recently, including an October 2022 avalanche at Draupadi Ka Danda-2 that killed 27 people, while the Kedartal route sees far fewer trekkers than the Gomukh route, which accounts for around 95% of area visitors.
Most of the expedition team members disappeared in a sudden snowstorm at an altitude of 4,000 meters. Although four of them later returned, the rest are still missing.
