No summer sports at the 2030 Winter Olympics, says IOC
IOC leaders said the programme review is aimed at controlling costs and complexity, with future changes possibly considered for 2034.
On Thursday, International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry announced that there will be "no crossover sports, no summer sports" at the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps.
2030 Games head Edgar Grospiron had previously proposed including outdoor disciplines like trail running and cyclocross to better utilize the French Alps terrain and boost participation.
Winter sports federations opposed the proposal, arguing that introducing summer events would "dilute the brand of the Winter Olympics" and require sharing limited revenues with new entities.
Coventry noted the working group will review future programs, stating such reforms would "potentially lend itself" to the 2034 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
As sport counts rise from 26 in 2012 to 36 by 2028, the IOC is managing Games complexity, with Coventry stating they "can't continue to just get bigger.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided that no summer events will be included in the program for the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps.
Cyclocross, gravel riding, cross-country running, and trail running will not be part of the 2030 Winter Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed this on Thursday. Freeride skiing and ice climbing do still stand a chance of being included in the program. This means that Mathieu van der Poel will definitely not be competing at the 2030 Games.
