No sign of larger hantavirus outbreak, says UN health agency

WHO said the risk of a major outbreak remains low after 7 confirmed cases and 3 deaths, while 122 people were repatriated.

  • On Tuesday, World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated there is "no sign" of a larger hantavirus outbreak after the final passengers evacuated the MV Hondius cruise ship.
  • The Andes hantavirus strain, which has a roughly 40% fatality rate, infected passengers after a 70-year-old Dutch man died aboard on April 11, marking the first of three total deaths linked to the vessel.
  • Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez coordinated the evacuation of more than 120 passengers from Tenerife, while 17 Americans were airlifted to Nebraska's National Quarantine Unit for health assessments.
  • A Dutch hospital in Nijmegen placed 12 staff members in quarantine after they mishandled blood and urine samples from an evacuated patient, creating precautionary isolation despite very low infection risk.
  • Passengers remain under observation for 42 days as Ghebreyesus warned the virus's long incubation period means additional cases could surface in the coming weeks despite current containment.
