Biden-era directive for diplomats to peddle DEI on foreign governments scrapped by State Department

- On Thursday, the State Department removed a Biden-era directive requiring diplomats to promote DEIA talking points, State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott announced. The change ends policies that critics argued subordinated national interests to progressive ideology.
- A March 2025 presidential memorandum eliminated the DEIA "core precept" from Foreign Service promotion criteria, which previously accounted for as much as 20 percent of performance evaluations. This directive formally ended ideological requirements in personnel reviews.
- In November 2025, the State Department announced 295 Foreign Service officers were denied promotion opportunities in 2024 due to these criteria. The department is now providing restitution to those affected by previous assessment biases.
- Critics previously argued that initiatives like a 2022 $20,600 grant for 12 drag performances in Cuenca, Ecuador, distracted from core diplomatic objectives. Officers were required to press local organizations on LGBTQI+ issues.
- Pigott said the administration is implementing sweeping reforms to prepare diplomats for traditional statecraft and 21st-century challenges. This reorients the Foreign Service away from previous mandates on social issues and what Pigott termed "woke political dogmas.
