No. 22 Iowa Uses Defense, Moulton’s Running Game to Beat Northern Illinois 40-0
Kamari Moulton and Iowa’s defense powered a 507-yard performance as the Hawkeyes also used two quarterbacks in the opener.
On Saturday, quarterback Hank Brown started for the Iowa Hawkeyes in their 2026 season opener against the Northern Illinois Huskies at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz maintained a competitive environment throughout spring and fall camps, with Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski splitting reps until the starter position remained undecided entering the game.
The Hawkeyes racked up 507 yards of total offense while holding the Huskies to just 120 yards and six first downs in a dominant 40-0 shutout victory.
Both Brown and Hecklinski played during the opener, as Ferentz noted the starting designation was "inconsequential" compared to actual game performance.
Iowa hosts Iowa State next Saturday at Kinnick Stadium, continuing the 2026 season following this decisive win against Mountain West newcomer Northern Illinois.
