NLC Demands Palliatives, Crude Allocation To Local Refiners As Petrol Price Surges
Joe Ajaero says higher fuel costs are deepening poverty and urges the Tinubu government to provide immediate relief as pump prices reach N1,430 a litre.
- On Wednesday, The Nigeria Labour Congress demanded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervene as fuel prices crossed N1,430 per litre. NLC President Joe Ajaero warned the hike drives up transportation costs and food prices for Nigerians.
- Filling stations, including Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited outlets in Abuja, increased pump prices to N1,395 and N1,450 per litre. Dangote Refinery and depot owners raised ex-depot petrol prices to between N1,265 and N1,340 per litre.
- The Federal Government is earning windfall profits from crude oil sales of between USD35 and 40 per barrel above budgeted figures. Ajaero argued the government should be satisfied with these gains rather than allowing marketers to inflict suffering.
- Rising costs have deepened poverty among Nigerians, including workers, according to Ajaero. He lamented that despite trillions of naira in windfall revenues, the government has yet to provide palliatives to cushion living costs.
- With the 2027 presidential election approaching, Ajaero urged the Federal Government to provide local refineries with sufficient crude oil. He stated that reliance on imports defeats the logic of local capacity and must cease.
