- On Wednesday, former Middle Township Elementary School teacher Laura Caron pleaded guilty to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child with sexual conduct, facing a five-year prison term under a plea agreement announced by Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland.
- Investigators alleged Caron sexually assaulted the student repeatedly between 2016 and 2020, beginning when the child was 11 years old, while the student and his siblings lived at her home with their mother's consent.
- Caron gave birth to the victim's child in 2019, when the student was 13 years old; the student's father triggered an investigation after posting on social media about a physical resemblance between himself, his son, and Caron's daughter.
- Before her sentencing on January 8, 2027, Caron must undergo an evaluation at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel to determine whether her conduct is classified as repetitive or compulsive, which could impact her sentence.
- Under the plea agreement, Caron is barred from all future public employment and must forfeit her teaching license; upon release, she will register as a sex offender and face lifetime parole supervision.
