Nigeria: Nitda Raises Alarm On Deepload Ai Malware Attacks, Proffers Solutions

The agency said the malware can steal credentials, disrupt systems and compromise classified networks, and urged organisations to follow protective steps immediately.

  • On Wednesday, The National Information Technology Development Agency issued a critical cybersecurity advisory warning Nigerians about DeepLoad, a new AI-powered malware actively targeting government agencies, financial institutions, businesses, and individuals.
  • DeepLoad spreads through social engineering techniques using fake website error messages that trick victims into pasting malicious commands, while employing a hidden WMI-based persistence mechanism to reactivate infections up to 3 days after removal.
  • Successful infections risk unauthorized access to bank accounts and theft of saved passwords; the agency warned, "Never paste commands from a website into your computer," and cautioned against opening files named Chrome Setup or Firefox Installer from USB drives.
  • If infection is suspected, NITDA mandates organizations must "disconnect from the internet immediately," change all passwords from a clean device, isolate affected systems, and report breaches within 72 hours as required by law.
  • This alert follows recent unauthorized access attacks on organizations including Remita, Sterling Bank, the Corporate Affairs Commission , and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission , prompting the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to establish a cybersecurity advisory council.
