Nirav Shah is making fundraising calls to gauge Maine Senate race
Shah said he has preliminary donor pledges and could reuse his governor campaign apparatus if Platner exits the race.
- On Thursday, Dr. Nirav Shah, former Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate to defeat incumbent Senator Susan Collins after Democrat Graham Platner withdrew.
- Platner suspended his campaign Wednesday following sexual assault allegations from former romantic partner Jenny Racicot, who alleged he assaulted her in 2021; Platner continues to deny the claims.
- Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson has officially entered the race, joining a crowded field of candidates. The Maine Democratic State Committee is organizing a roughly 600-person convention to select the nominee by July 27.
- Shah pledged to support Medicare for All and hold Donald Trump accountable, while Jackson wrote that "our systems have been rigged for the ultra-wealthy oligarchs for far too long."
- Democrats must quickly select a nominee to challenge five-term Senator Susan Collins in a race projected to draw nearly $500 million in spending, more than double Maine's previous record.
