Nike cuts 1,400 roles in second round of layoffs this year
The cuts are part of the company’s Win Now turnaround plan and affect less than 2% of Nike’s global headcount, officials said.
- On Thursday, Nike Inc. announced it will cut approximately 1,400 global operations roles, primarily in its technology department, as part of COO Venkatesh Alagirisamy's "Win Now" turnaround strategy.
- CEO Elliott Hill is leading a turnaround effort following a 35% drop in third-quarter net income reported in March, aiming to reverse slumping sales and achieve "long-term, profitable growth."
- Strategic changes include modernizing Air Manufacturing Innovation facilities in Beaverton, St. Louis, and Vietnam, while moving some Converse Footwear operations closer to factory partners and integrating materials supply chain work.
- Impacted employees will be notified beginning Thursday with clear information and support, as Alagirisamy stated, "Part of doing the right thing is being direct." The announcement follows 775 job cuts announced in January at distribution centers in Tennessee and Mississippi.
- Over the coming months, Nike will continue evolving global operations with "more speed, simplicity, and precision," marking the third major workforce reduction in less than a year as the company pursues its restructuring strategy.
