Nigerian troops kill 18 militants in northeast operations, military says

The offensive targeted insurgent hideouts after recent attacks on military bases, and troops recovered rifles, machine guns, motorcycles and explosives materials.

  • Nigerian troops killed 18 suspected terrorists during coordinated ground and air offensives in Borno State, the military said on Wednesday. The operations, conducted under Operation Desert Sanity V, targeted insurgent enclaves along the Bulabulin Forest and Timbuktu axes.
  • The Boko Haram insurgency has entered its 17th year, with conflict spreading beyond the North-east. Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province have intensified attacks on military bases located within civilian-populated areas.
  • Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, reported troops killed 11 militants at Malam Shiri and seven in the Timbuktu area. Soldiers recovered nine AK-47 rifles, three PKT anti-aircraft machine guns, five motorcycles, and improvised explosive device materials.
  • The Nigerian Air Force provided intelligence and precision strikes during the engagements, Uba said. Troops are currently conducting follow-up operations in the Forfor, Multe, and Wajiroko areas to track fleeing insurgents and dismantle life-support structures.
  • These offensives demonstrate growing operational effectiveness across the North-east theater, according to the military. By pushing into deep, mountainous, and forested enclaves, the Joint Task Force aims to maintain sustained pressure on insurgent groups.
