Nigerian Govt convenes emergency meeting over rising cooking gas prices
Officials said June LPG supply is expected to exceed demand if delivery and distribution improve, while regulators intensify surveillance against hoarding and diversion.
- The Federal Government ordered a clampdown on marketers hoarding or diverting Liquefied Petroleum Gas following price surges, with Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ekperikpe Ekpo issuing the directive during an emergency stakeholders' meeting in Nigeria.
- Rising Liquefied Petroleum Gas prices stem from global supply disruptions and the Israel-Iran conflict, compounded by incomplete domestic production and inadequate distribution infrastructure, according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority .
- Ekpo directed the NMDPRA to "intensify monitoring, publish market updates, investigate hoarding and diversion," while ordering depot owners to "publish loading schedules, disclose stock and evacuation levels."
- "Marketers have indicated readiness to increase imports where necessary," Chief Executive of the NMDPRA Rabiu Umar said, noting that expected supplies from new domestic facilities, including the Seplat Energy gas facility, will improve availability.
- Ongoing measures across the value chain should ease market pressures in the coming weeks, Umar stated, as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources Patience Oyekunle emphasized that increasing Liquefied Petroleum Gas supply remains critical to Nigeria's clean cooking agenda.
