Military Court Postpones Ruling in Alleged Coup Plot Trial Involving Military Officers

- The General Court Martial postponed its ruling on the alleged coup trial for the fourth time, rescheduling the session from Wednesday to Monday, October 5, 2026. The trial involves officers accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.
- Presided over by Air Vice Marshal H.I. Alhaji at the Scorpion Officers' Mess in Asokoro, Abuja, the court is determining the admissibility of disputed statements. Defense lawyers argue these statements were obtained through coercion by Defence Intelligence Agency officials.
- During a trial-within-a-trial, some defendants testified they were subjected to intimidation and physical abuse, claiming they were forced to sign pre-written documents. Prosecutors maintain all evidence was obtained voluntarily and without improper pressure.
- Testimony revealed that the alleged plot included cutting electricity at the Presidential Villa to aid the coup. Zekeri Umoru, the 4th defendant and maintenance worker, warned such actions would trigger immediate security investigations and detention of staff.
- The military notice, signed by Liaison Officer Major M.U. Ardo, did not specify a reason for the latest postponement. The court's ruling will determine whether contested evidence can be relied upon in the ongoing proceedings.
