Nigeria: Lassa Fever Deaths Rise to 214 As Fatality Rate Reaches 25.0%

- Lassa fever has claimed 214 lives in Nigeria, with the case fatality rate climbing to 19.3 per cent, as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention reported the outbreak has affected 23 states and 109 Local Government Areas since January 2026.
- Five states account for 84 per cent of confirmed infections, led by Ondo State with 28 per cent; Bauchi, Taraba, Edo, and Benue follow with 25, 15, 10, and 6 per cent respectively.
- State health officials confirmed on Monday that Dr. Vitalis Tersoo Azever, a medical doctor with APIN Public Health Initiatives in Benue State, died after struggling with Lassa fever for over two weeks.
- Dr. Msonter Anzaa of the Moses Orshio Adasu University Medical Alumni Association declared a seven-day mourning period for both Dr. Azever and Dr. Cedric Tyoor Kondom, who died of bone marrow failure.
- Response efforts continue through the National Lassa Fever Multi-Partner, Multi-Sectoral Incident Management System, though Dr. Anzaa lamented what he described as the "now-too-familiar shortcomings" of the nation's healthcare system.
