In Niger, the dissolution of five justice trade unions two weeks ago, followed by the dismissal of two magistrates, members of the autonomous Nigerian magistrates' union (Saman), continues to provoke reactions.
In an attempt to corporalize the judiciary, unique in Niger's history, General Abdourahamane Tiani dissolved five magistrates' unions and, by order, gave power of coercion to judges.
The crisis was immediately defused on the evening of 17 August. The tension between the Niamey government and the largest Nigerian magistrates' union threatened both sides with serious collateral damage.
