NIA Nabs Four in Coimbatore Blast Radicalisation Probe

TAMIL NADU, JUN 18 – The National Investigation Agency linked the arrests to a network that used Arabic education to recruit youth for ISIS, raising the total accused to eight in Tamil Nadu.

  • On 18 June 2025, the NIA arrested four more individuals in Tamil Nadu for their role in ISIS-linked radicalisation and recruitment related to the 2022 Coimbatore car bomb blast.
  • The arrests come in the wake of a car bomb attack on October 23, 2022, close to the Kottai Sangameswarar Temple in Coimbatore, which resulted in the death of the suicide bomber, Jamesha Mubeen, an ISIS supporter who had pledged loyalty to the group's leader.
  • Among those detained were individuals named Ahmed Ali, Jawahar Sathik, Raja Abdullah—also known as MAC Raja—and Sheikh Dawood, who were reportedly influenced by Jameel Basha and his team. Basha and his collaborators allegedly employed educational settings and social media channels to spread Salafi-Jihadi beliefs as well as Khilafat ideology.
  • The NIA confirmed the network promoted violent jihad, martyrdom through armed struggle, and aimed to overthrow the democratically elected Indian government.
  • These arrests raise the total accused in the case to eight and indicate continued investigations to dismantle radicalisation networks operating across Tamil Nadu including Chennai and Dindigul.
