NHS Issues 11am to 3pm 'Stay Inside' Warning for Thousands of Brits Amid Heatwave
The health service warned that people over 75 and those with heart or breathing problems face the highest risk as heat-related illness rises.
The NHS is urging people across the country to stay indoors on Tuesday as temperatures are expected to reach 36°C, with the hottest conditions forecast between 11am and 3pm.
Heatwaves typically result in significantly increased numbers of severe illnesses and deaths, prompting the UK Health Security Agency to issue yellow heat warnings as elevated temperatures present heightened risks for vulnerable populations.
Older adults over 75, particularly women, face the most acute effects, alongside those living alone or in care homes, people on multiple medications, and individuals with Alzheimer's disease, with certain drugs including diuretics increasing dehydration risk.
The NHS advises keeping windows shut during daylight and opening them at night, staying in shade between 11am and 3pm, and cooling skin with water, while Mario Kreft MBE, Chair of Care Forum Wales, said care homes were "working tirelessly" to keep residents safe, cool and hydrated.
People taking common antidepressants including Sertraline, Citalopram and Fluoxetine require particular caution, as Dr Sameer Sanghvi, Clinical Technology Lead at LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor, explained these medications can disrupt temperature regulation, with SNRIs causing excessive sweating and SSRIs linked to heat intolerance.
